Sometimes it's
more easy to work with parts of a photo then with the whole photo.
An example for this is the work with blends ... it's very
important that the photos really blend together or else the result
will look strange. Several times you should use the whole photo,
but in other cases it's better to make a kind of
"misted" tube out of the important parts of the photo.
There's no way to tell you to do this or that ... you have to try
and fail - that's the only way to find out how you can achieve the
best results.
|
 |
Open a New Image, Size: 800x600 Pixels, Color: Black.
Minimize the picture (black background).
Open the photo "Becoming_Human_by_Tess_Stock from
tess-stock.deviantart.com.
Resize the
photo to a Height of 600. (If you want to use it later on, sharpen
the resized photo).
Choose the Selection Tool/Lasso (white hand), additional modus
(red arrow), and draw a rough selection (blue line) around the
important parts of the photo. Click the button Generate lasso
selection (white arrow).
Right click/Soften: 80 (or something around that number ...
depending on your photo and the wished effect of the selection).
|
|
 |
Right click/Convert to Object, choose
the Pick Tool (white hand) and drag the converted selection from the photo
(1) on your free working space (2).
|
|
 |
Maximize
the black background, copy (Ctrl+C) the tube (1) and paste
(Ctrl+V) it on the background (2).
Minimize the black background picture.
|
|
 |
Choose
the Selection Tool/Lasso once more, additional modus (red arrow),
set the Soft edge to 50 (white arrow), and click the button Select
on object (white hand).
Draw a close selection around the parts of the tube you want to
set off (blue line - 1), and click the button Generate lasso
selection as before.
Right click and choose Convert to Object.
Now we copy the selection, maximize the black background
picture and paste also this selection on the background.
My intention with this tutorial is to show you the difference
between "Misted tubes" ... normally I also drag the
2.selection on my free working space, and save it afterwards as
ufo.file or as psd.file.

On this screenshot you can see the two "misted tubes"
I've made, beside each other.
1 - here I used the Selection Tool one time ...
2 - here I used the Selection Tool twice.
|
|
|
 |
Now I'm trying
to blend the tubes better onto the background ... that's very
important by making blends.
Tube 1 - I changed the Soft edge to 150 (red arrow) - as you can see
... the result isn't satisfying.
|
|
|
 |
Tube 2 - here I
changed the Soft edge to 20 (red arrow).
I could have used a higher number, but that isn't really necessary ... the result is quite alright.
|
|
|
 |
This is NOT a step you have to do for making "Misted
tubes", ... I only want to show you that there is even a
difference - also after trying another blend inn method. First I reset the tubes on the background to their original form.
To blend "tubes" better into the background you can also
try the command Edit/Fade Out.
Here I used these settings:
Fill type: 6. (white hand)
Fill color: Two-color:
100% (white arrow) to 50 % (red arrow).
I used the same setting for both tubes.
|
|
|
 |
On the first
tube I changed the Soft edge to 150, and on the 2. tube I used the
same Soft edge as I did before on this tube: 20.
You still can see a difference between the two tubes .. so my preferred
method is the second one ... where you use the Selection Tool twice.
Is a little bit more work, but I think it better fits my
needs.
This method - the settings - differs from photo to photo ... all you
can do is try it out until you get the best result.

Here's
the result of the two "misted tubes" in the original
size. :))
