In case you need to freshen up your memory on how to save a mask
into the EP - you can take a look at one of my other
tutorials, where I explain a little bit more about how to use a
mask in PI. You'll find the tut here.
|
 |
Open
the mask msk14.gif, go to Format/ Invert, and save this new
mask into your EP. Check that the mask is a Grayscale 8-bit
mask.
Open the picture you want to use, and double-click on the new
mask, you've just made (1). Chose the Transform Tool (red
arrow), click the Selection button (2) and resize the mask to fit your
photo. |
|
 |
Change
to Mask mode (red arrow), and chose the Paintbrush (white
arrow).
I've set the Soft edge to 50 (1), color black. Now I used the
paintbrush on the mask (2) to removed some parts of the mask,
where I wanted to photo to show through.
|
|
 |
Leave
the Mask mode, and by that time my picture looked like the one
to the left.

 |
Go
to Effect/Eye Candy 4000 (3.1) or any other filter with a
weave effect. Try to find some nice settings for your picture,
and here I used Eye Candy 4000 with these settings:
Ribbon Width: 16.19
Gap Width: 8.28
Shadow Strength: 45
Thread Detail: 50
Thread Length: 23.09
Gap Fill/Fill Color: white (or chose the color you want ... perhaps a special background color).
Click OK. |
|
 |
Go
to Effect/Alien Skin/Xenofex 2/Burnt Edges. For this picture
I used these settings:
Contract/Expand Selection: -10.62
Burn Width: 74.91
Roughness: 20
Burn Color: 34/58/35 (I picked this color from the original
photo)
Fill Inside Burn/Fill Color: white (also here ... chose the
color you want.)
Overall Opacity: 81
Random Seed: 9881
Click OK, Merge All and your picture is finished! |

Here
are some other examples I've made with masks and 3rd party
filters.
The original picture is made by Jonathon
Earl Bowser. Have a look at his site ... he has really
amazing art pictures. |
|
|
 |
To see the
difference of the effects, I used the same picture from Jonathon
Earl Bowser for all
masks and filters. |
|
| That's it! A different way to
use your masks ... you change them before you apply the color,
or fill them with a texture.
And with the help different filters you can achieve a lot of
outstanding effects. You can use all kind of filters, so you
have endless possibilities to make really beautiful art
pictures.
The 2.part of this tutorial is mostly for those which don't
have the Xenofex 2 filter. I show you two other ways ... mask
and a free filter ... to achieve a look alike effect. It's not
totally similar but you can still make beautiful, outstanding
pictures by that way.
HAVE FUN!!!
