DESCRIPTION: This tutorial shows you how you can make a special frame to decorate your photos ... by using PI, different filters and a mask.

Remember to save often!

For this tutorial, as for all of them, we are going to make a lot of similar frames/borders, with the same color/fill/pattern - using the same steps over again, so next time I'm only referring to 1 Color (=Foreground color), 2 Black or 2 Silver (=GoldFillPattern_silvergrey). Just repeat the steps I'm explaining for the first frame/border. (Always expand sides equally, and with the pixels mentioned in front of the color.)

To make it more easy to select a border, right click/All, right click/Border and set the Pixels of the border for the Border width, Direction: Inward, Shape: Box. You can always use the Magic Wand Tool, but this way it's more easy if you use similar colors for the background and the border. (On the assumption that all sides have been expanded equally!)

Open the picture, choose a Foreground color - 166/107/9 (white arrow).
Go to Adjust/Expand Canvas/Expand sides equally 1 pixel, Expand: Black. Select the border, right click/Convert to Object, right click/Shadow and use the 5.one (red arrow) with these settings: 14/99/7.
Deselect.

2 Color + 1 Black.

Expand: 2 White, select the border and go to Edit/Fill/ Image/File and find the file - GoldFillPattern_silvergrey.
Remember to check the box Tile the image.
Deselect.

1 Black.

Expand: 18 Color, select the border and go to Effect/ Toadies/Rasterline and apply the default settings:
249/255.
Go to Selection/Select by Color Range and use the Eyedropper (red arrow) to select all White from our border (red oval). Set the similarity to 100 (white arrow).
Go to Edit/Fill/Color and fill with the Foreground color (166/107/9).
Selection/None and Merge All.

Go one more time to the Selection/Select by Color Range, but this time pick the Black with the Eyedropper (red arrow). Set the similarity to 1 (white arrow). As you will see there is a lot of Black in this picture, and even if we set the Similarity to 1, some parts of the picture - which we don't want to - are selected. To correct this use the Mask Mode.

In case you need to freshen up your memory on how to save a mask into the EP - you can take a look at one of my other tutorials, where I explain a little bit more about how to use a mask in PI. You'll find the tut here.

Choose Mask Mode (red arrow), Paintbrush (white arrow) and color: Black (white hand). For this example I've set the Shape to square and the Soft edge to 0.
Use now the Paintbrush to retouch all the unwished selections - as you can see on the screenshot.
When you are satisfied, leave the Mask Mode and go to Edit/Fill/Color and fill with a darker shade of the Foreground color. (I used 112/72/5).
Selection/None.

Right click/All, right click/Border, Border width: 18 (white hand), Direction: Inward (red arrow), Shape: Box.
Go to Effect/Almathera/A Halo: Black + 16/56.
Deselect.

1 Black.

Expand: 3 Color, select the border and go to Effect/ Bordermania/Frame #2: 3/3/110/130 + Notch Corners.
Deselect.

2 Silver + 1 Black.

Expand: 3 Color, select the border and go to Effect/ Bordermania/Frame #2: 3/3/110/130 + Notch Corners.
Deselect.

Expand: 26 Color, select the border and go to Effect/ Greg's Factory Output Vol.II (red arrow)/Pool Shadow (white arrow) and apply these settings (1):
50/50/50/50/50/50/70/146.
Your screenshot might look different, since I'm using Filters Unlimited 2 - but the settings are the same anyway.
Click Apply and keep the border selected. Go to Effect/ Almathera/A Halo and apply these settings: Black + 21/58.
Deselect.

1 Black.

Expand: 3 Color, select the border and go to Effect/ Bordermania/Frame #2: 3/3/110/130 + Notch Corners.
Deselect.

2 Silver + 1 Black.

Expand: 33 Color and select the border. Apply the mask you've downloaded dm-24. Resize the mask and use the Mask Mode to retouch the mask. By using the Paintbrush (white arrow), with the color: Black (white hand) you can easily correct those parts of the mask which are inside the last - 33 pixel - border (see screenshot).
When you are satisfied, leave the Mask Mode, go to Edit/Fill/Color and use the same darker shade of the Foreground color as you did before (112/72/5).
Apply the color 3 times, go to Photo/Focus/Options and set the Level to +1.
Deselect the border and Merge All.

Right click/All, right click/Border, Border width: 33, Direction: Inward, Shape: Box and Soft edge: 0.
Go to Effect/Bordermania/Frame #2 and apply these settings: 33/33/45/36 + Notch Corners.
Deselect.

Expand: 3 Color, select the border and go to Effect/ Bordermania/Frame #2. Use these settings:
3/3/110/130 + Notch Corners.
Deselect.

2 Silver.

Merge All.

That's it! A special frame for any kind of photo ... done with PI, different filters and a mask. HAVE FUN!!!
