IMPORTANT NOTE:

I made the mask and the object with Filters Unlimited 2.0,
and the photo is one of my private ones.
They are only for your private use - you are not allowed to claim them as yours,
offer them for sale or download, or use them for your own tutorials.

Remember to save often!

Before we start, you should open the mask, and store it into your Easy Palette. In case you need to freshen up your memory on how to save a mask into the EP - you can take a look at one of my other tutorials, where I explain a little bit more about how to use a mask in PI. You'll find the tutorial here.
Important - in my tutorials my masks fit the chosen background/object ... you achieve this by right clicking any mask inside the original category Mask Library in your Easy Palette. Now you choose the option Fit Mask.

You can also achieve this old photo style by using Filters Unlimited 2.0. (Effects from the Photo Aging Kit.) But I thought I should make this effect also possible for those of you which don't have FU, but still like this kind of photography.

Open the my photo, 2006-11-12_Dragoer_029_inkl.jpg.

Go to Photo/Enhance/Duotone and tick the box Enable sepia effect and range (white hand).
Set the first color to 73/64/44 (1), and the second color to 120/105/72 (2).
Now move the little arrows (red arrows) to achieve a nice old looking color. There are no exact settings to give - you have to try by yourself. Just look at the preview window to the right and you move the sliders until you are satisfied.
I've also saved my new duotone to my Easy Palette (white arrow) ... that's an easy way to color different pictures with colors from the same color scheme. And you still can change the contrast on each of them.

FU: If you have FU, you can go to FU/Photo Aging Kit and choose Cracked Paper. You can change the Texture and the Intensity of the filter. I recommend that you change the Intensity, or else the cracks on the photography will be very strong. But as always - try by yourself. Everything depends on which effect you want to achieve. Can be nice with stronger cracks too. :))

If you don't have FU, or if you want to use the mask, open your Easy Palette/Libraries (white hand) and double-click the mask tut031_mask (1), which you've downloaded, unzipped and stored into the EP. On the screenshot you can see that the mask applied on the image (2).

With the mask you have more control about the effect, and you can use whatever fill color you want to. That's not possible with the filter.

FU: Skip this step!

Go to Edit/Fill/Color (1) and choose the color   244/244/244 (red arrows). You can also use the Hex-number: #F4F4F4 (white hand).
Change the Transparency to 70% (white arrow).
Click OK and deselect the mask (spacebar).

FU: If you use FU and want to use it all the way, just skip the next two steps - expanding the canvas.
But be aware ... if you use a filter, the color surrounding your photo will be black. You can't choose another color!

Adjust/Expand Canvas and tick the box Expand sides equally (red arrow). Expand with 1 Pixels, Expand color: 244/244/244 (white hand).
Click OK.

Adjust/Expand Canvas, expand sides equally. Expand with 13 Pixels, Expand color: Black.

FU: Go to FU/Photo Aging Kit and choose Photo Frame 05 (or one of the others). As you can see ... you don't have the possibility to choose the background color with this filter.

Open the object from the zip file, tut031_object (1), copy (Ctrl+C) the object (1) and paste (Ctrl+V) the copy on our main picture (2).
Close the original object, the object on the main picture should still be activated.
Right click the object/Align/Center Both (red arrow).

The size of the object is fitting the picture I've put inside the zip file. If you use another picture, you might have to resize the object to fit your picture.

Merge All ... and your photo is finished. Looking like an old photography :))

Here's the result with the background color of my homepage, and with a tiny shadow :))

And here's another photo made after the same tutorial :))

That's it! A beautiful and very quick method to make a photo looking old ... made with PI, one mask and one object (FU ... optional). HAVE FUN!!!
